Very authentic Mexican food and atmosphere.
Taquería La Juanita | Mexican
About this place
Taqueria La Juanita sits on Lake Avenue North in Storm Lake, a spot longtime regulars sometimes still call by an older nickname despite the current name on the sign. The restaurant has built a reputation that extends well beyond its small Iowa town, with out-of-state visitors specifically making it a yearly destination whenever they're in the area visiting family, some traveling from as far as Michigan to eat here at least once during their trip.
Al pastor and carne asada tacos are the most frequently recommended items, and the asada tacos alongside tacos de al pastor draw specific praise for flavor. The chile verde carries a noticeable kick without overwhelming the dish, and while the rice is described as tasty, a few reviewers have suggested the beans could use a bit more seasoning to match. The caldo de res, a beef soup served as a rotating special, has earned praise as excellent from at least one regular customer who tried it recently. The restaurant keeps its pricing on the affordable side across the board, a detail multiple reviewers highlight as hard to beat given the quality of the food served.
Service is consistently described as fast and friendly, with drinks staying in stock and food coming out quickly even during busier stretches, and the atmosphere is generally calm rather than rowdy, making it comfortable for families. One drawback mentioned by a visitor is limited air circulation inside during warmer months, which can make the dining room feel muggy, though reviewers note it doesn't take away from the food itself. With extended hours on Friday and Saturday nights stretching to 2 AM, Taqueria La Juanita offers Storm Lake a rare combination of small-town charm and genuinely excellent, affordable Mexican food that keeps drawing people back, wherever they're traveling from. The loyalty it has built extends across generations of the same families, with reviewers describing repeat visits over many years and consistently walking away impressed by a menu that rivals what's typically found in much larger cities. For a town the size of Storm Lake, the restaurant's reputation for authentic, well-seasoned Mexican food has become a point of local pride, one that residents happily point visitors toward whenever the subject of good food in the area comes up.

I’m from Texas where we have access to pretty good Mexican food. Food here tastes like the real deal. Some restaurants have one good thing while another makes something else really good. Everything I tasted here was so good that I was in shock from the first bite. Awesome Lengua and Buche tacos
Went there for a last minute meal as everything was already closed. The food was good- I had taco el pastor , it’ll be better with lime in it . I was not given any. The burrito steak meal is tasty , however I’m surprised that it didn’t came with tortilla chips , I ordered two meals and no chips or salsa that came with it . I also ordered Chicken taco salad and hardly had any salad in it . It’s all but shredded chicken with some toppings and cheese . I read great reviews , food was good but it’s not something I will visit often.
Wonderful authentic tacos. Everything is delicious. I ordered chicken, beef and pork tacos as seen in the picture
Absolutely the best Mexican food I've ever had. The seasoning on the carnitas was fantastic, like nothing I've ever tasted before. Next time I go back to Storm Lake I'm going to take a huge cooler and order one of everything they make to take home and try with my family. It's seriously that good! And really inexpensive, it looked too cheap on the menu so I ordered two dinners (Chile relleno and burrito dinner) but they were full size dinner plates, see photo. I had way too much food so I took some home to my wife the next day. She said we should drive 4 hours back to Storm Lake just to get some more for lunch :)
The food is very good. Ordering for the first time customer can be a little confusing, but they are very patient. Service was great. Food is the best Latino food in Storm Lake and the drinks are really good too. Recommend the pineapple drink and the Ceviche!
Always fantastic, been coming here weekly for over 10 years.
Very fast and affordable; tastes to match.
